President Bush (having failed in Iraq, responsible fiscal policy, saving Social Security, lowering prescription medication costs, and nearly every other campaign promise) reinvigorated his commitment to discrimination. Debate over a Constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman will resume this week, even though 2/3rds of Congress will never approve the proposal and the only states that would vote for a ridiculous amendment are the 19 states that have already amended their constitutions.
Fortunately, Bush’s reactive actions won’t change his dismal approval ratings because Americans who are pathologically obsessed with the threat posed to our values by homosexuals are relegated to the 30% that still support him.
Peter Anderson and I went to see An Inconvenient Truth tonight. If you have any doubt about the impact humans are having upon the environment, if you think global warming is a crazy treehugger theory, if you care about you children or grandchildren, go see this movie.
The movie exemplifies scientific data, addresses critics of global warming, explains the severity of pollution over the past 650,000 years, the impact of what will happen in the near future, and the solutions that already exist to fix the problems.
Global warming is not a political issue. It’s not about ruining our economy to save a some owls. We’ve pushed the earth beyond natural heating and cooling cycles. Our existence could very well lead to our extinction in the next century.
I’ve never been a fan of Gore’s public speaking ability, but Davis Guggenheim does an excellent job of presenting this important issue. The movie is also a huge Apple Powerbook and Keynote advertisement. ;-)
Within moments of Sony Imageworks rejecting my application to work at its booth during SIGGRAPH 2006, my Powerbook power cable got caught on my chair and embarked on a collision course with the floor. This has been the most depressing ten-minutes of my 2006.
I need a cheer up tickle.
