Amend This

Marriage is about commitment, not discrimination

President Bush (having failed in Iraq, responsible fiscal policy, saving Social Security, lowering prescription medication costs, and nearly every other campaign promise) reinvigorated his commitment to discrimination. Debate over a Constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman will resume this week, even though 2/3rds of Congress will never approve the proposal and the only states that would vote for a ridiculous amendment are the 19 states that have already amended their constitutions.

Fortunately, Bush’s reactive actions won’t change his dismal approval ratings because Americans who are pathologically obsessed with the threat posed to our values by homosexuals are relegated to the 30% that still support him.

Here in California, we’re voting on the issue again on Tuesday. Hopefully we’ll make some progress this time.

Disgusting. Never mind Iraq, the economy, gas prices, or anything that most normal people actually care about.

It is patently wrong to enact a discriminatory amendment to the U. S. Constitution. Our Bill of Rights attempts to ensure equality among our country’s citizens. A constitutional amendment banning gay marriage would be one giant leap backward in the protections to U. S. citizens that the U. S. Constitution allegedly provides.

Typical Republican partisan politics on Bush’s part. Nothing new, just motivate the base through homophobia. The Cheney’s are noticably quiet on the matter. Go figure.

My translation of their efforts to “protect the family” = keep queers second class citizens.
