Houston Bowl

Saturday, December 31st, 2005

When Arthur first told me that his sister would be performing (TCU color guard) at a college football bowl game while we were visiting his family and that we would be going to see her, excitement did not rush overwhelmingly over me. But I’m easy going and open to whatever while on break. I had never been to a college football game. I don’t go to a school with a super exciting sports program. This opportunity probably won’t come again anytime soon.

I had a great time! College football in person is actually exciting. Arthur’s patience explaining to me all the rules and various bad calls by the zebras greatly added to the experience. Josh and I texted each other throughout the game, the closest we’ve ever come to watching football together.

In case you missed the game on ESPN ocho 2, the TCU funky horned frogs won over the ISU cyclones by 3.

Early AM Flight

Monday, December 26th, 2005

She lit a second cigarette within 5 minutes of the airport. The airport wasn’t that far away from her apartment. Maniacal red lights, depressingly slow speed limits that reflected the pace of this place’s society, and my anxiety to see my love just made the journey seem longer. We didn’t talk much.

She got two hours of sleep before my first attempt to wake her. Her alarm went off and kept going off, like a certain adult relative with a history of holiday temper tantrums. She ignored the alarm like we ignore this relative. I tried lights, shaking, whispering her name. Fifteen minutes later, she yelled at me to get out of the room with the promising threat that she would get up. I contemplated just calling a taxi, though I’m not sure if there even are taxis in Lynchburg. I think I saw one once, but it might have just been a hipster trying to be cool in a place where nothing cool penetrates. While I fell asleep around midnight, I didn’t sleep well. The fleas in my sister’s apartment were partying harder than my sister last night. Fleas apparently like B+ blood. I’m not sure how fleas can survive with the ever present plume of cigarette smoke in her apartment.

My morning shower relaxed me. I read somewhere that cigarette particles are pushed down in bathroom fog. I breathed more easily regardless. The fleas hopefully drowned a slow painful death. I scrubbed extra hard while acknowledging that it’s been awhile since I manscaped. Such is life.

I couldn’t help but think of how awkward it is being an adult with her as I grabbed my bags from the back seat. She flicked some ash and told me that I loved her. There wasn’t a tone of affirmation in her voice. She knew it’s always been true. It always will be.

Xmas Newsletter

Sunday, December 25th, 2005

So my Christmas newsletter was supposed to be mailed to everyone, but it wasn’t finished in time. Think of this digital version as a way to save paper, gas that would have been used in transport, and money.

Made It

Wednesday, December 21st, 2005

Finals are over. Various semester long projects are over. Bags almost packed.

T minus 2 hours until liftoff in Arthur’s chariot with Steph. Destinations: Jersey (to drop off Steph), D.C. (to pick up Robbie, Arthur’s step-dad), Virginia (to drop off me). The co-pilots, Arthur and Robbie, will continue onto Texas. Once I survive Christmas with my family for the first time since being out, I will fly to Texas for a few days before flying to Nicaragua for 2 weeks of photography, hiking, scuba diving, and other fun activities you might find in an Abercrombie catalog.

Bah Hum Bug

Thursday, December 8th, 2005

I woke up late, my Powerbook wasn’t charged because humpty dumpty had a great fall the previous night, my professor picked on me all morning, I found out that I got a B on my Islam presentation, but my day wasn’t bad enough. Oh no. I went to lunch and bit into a living bug hiding in my salad. I spat it out; its taste like spicy cleaning chemicals. I left hungry, yet not wanting to eat. I ran to the bathroom. The bug had a seizure on the table. The waiter didn’t make us pay.

…but not sleeping.

Quote

Sunday, December 4th, 2005

Steph: I wonder who Lynette is.
Arthur: She’s the driver of the limo.
Steph: I think she’s a bonus in the back seat.

Quote

Me (referring to Arthur’s Mazda RX-8): “This is totally a get-away car.”
Steph (referring to our slow pace after getting running to the car): “Except this is totally not get-away traffic.”

1000 Words

A picture is worth 1000 words. Apple stock is worth, oh, more than double of what it started out a year ago.
