I spent the first night at my new apartment last night. My mattresses did not arrive until 8 this morning. The bunk-bed frame won’t be here for another three weeks. My roommate and apartmentmate are moving in sometime in the next week. Adam Woolley is crashing with me before jetting off to Europe, without me. I will be in Florida this weekend taping Mark’s wedding.
And a woman said, “Good morning,” to me, a passing stranger, on my walk to the T today. It made me smile and miss San Diego.
It was a moment when 9/11 didn’t seem so far away. Loud sporadic solo booms launched my eyes to the sky. All I could see were shadows of buildings on other buildings caused by quick flashes of light in the otherwise normal night sky. A chill sank inside me. Tourist trap Faneuil Hall and surrounding streets were vacant… or vacated. No… It couldn’t be.
My instinct told me to run to where I wasn’t surrounded by buildings scraping the sky, so I did. Another flash. Another single boom.
I stopped, now perched upon Government Center’s seemingly infinite stairs to survey the sky. My shallow breaths thundered along with Boston’s sudden onset of uncanny silence. The beckoning red moon glowed in fullness low on the horizon. It glowed silently. I breathed silently.
Screeches of the green line rounding the corner underground reverberated through the tiled tube of the subway station’s entrance, the doors channeling the wails behind me.
Silence.
A siren.
Sirens.
Panic?
I turned towards the T. Another boom. I turned back towards Faneuil Hall.
Five of my referrals have completed offers, I have completed an offer, and my free iPod has been ordered.
Note: Please do not use my referral link any more. Go find another one of your friends who needs referrals because you can only get one iPod.
I budgeted for a 1GB RAM upgrade for my new iBook when I purchased it, however, I have been too busy to buy it until now. So I went to dealram and found that Other World Computing had a great price and offered 2-day shipping. The latter was very important because I am doing a big project this weekend and need the RAM.
But, like everything else that happened today, something so simple did not work out. Other World Computing is stuck in a 1990s-era business model. To “protect customers,” Other World Computing requires that the shipping address be a verified address on the credit card being used. If the shipping address is not the billing address or a verified address for the card, you must fax your driver’s license and other crap to the company. Facsimile died circa 2000. There is no excuse for an e-business to be using a 1980s technology at the core of its billing process.
Call me crazy, but I thought that the point of the internet was to be faster, cheaper, and more convenient. Other World Computing is insane. What if I wanted to order RAM as a gift for someone? What if I am a college student and moved more than a nomad and just kept one address as a permanent address for my bank? What if I ordered RAM on behalf of a non-tech savvy individual? I’ve shipped Amazon.com purchases to 7 different addresses in the last two years. I most certainly am not adding all of these addresses to my Visa.
I do not own a fax machine. I guess I am going to be forced to spend $3 on a fax transmission at Mail Boxes Etc. near Emerson (you know, the one that lost my server). Why would any company make doing business so damn difficult? Unless I receive a free upgrade to overnight shipping, I will never buy from Other World Computing again.

I hate being dressed to kill when no one you really care about is there to appreciate the effort.
I can’t wait to move into my new apartment! First, my daddy-oh wants to visit me sometime in September. I really hope he makes the journey because he has never been to Emerson’s campus and I need to get him one of those cheesy Emerson College bumper stickers.
Secondly, one of my rad friends from San Diego, Stephen Greenwood, is taking a whirlwind bus tour across these here United States. September 8, 2004, of his journey brings him to Bostonia and a short layover at Casa de Jeremias. Now, I only need to be able to convince him that Emerson’s BFA New Media program kicks UCLA’s design|media art program in a 24-hour period.
My weekly routine has been quite consistent this summer. Every weekday, I work from 5-9 PM at a market research company. On days without anything special, I am usually working on the EVVY DVD or one of my other Emerson-related creative projects. Here’s a daily breakdown.
Monday: creative work, then Work
Tuesday: creative work, then Work
Wednesday: EVVY producer meeting with Arthur and Trevor, then chill in the DPL until Work
Thursday: Work, teamDPL Ultimate Frisbee on the Common, then party time at Phi Kappa Sigma
Friday: creative work, then Work, the usually something social
Saturday: I work from 12-4 PM at Emerson’s Digital Production Labs.
Sunday: Church, grocery shopping, weekly meal preparation
The MBTA Green-C line has become my primary transportation. I have collected three monthly MBTA Subway passes. Gotta collect them all. Once I get enough of them, I am going to make a unique belt. Anyhoo, I can now name every stop from Haymarket to Cleveland Circle. Doors are opening on the right. No smoking please.
Where did July go? And how is it nearly a third of the way through August? Time seemed to progress at the accepted normal pace this summer, but then something accelerated life.
The 23rd Annual EVVY Awards DVD is nearing completion. Producing the DVD has been an excellent opportunity to work with the executive producers for the 24th Annual EVVY Awards. But the time has come to duplicate these discs and ease into my unannounced producer position. More on that later.
NEPC‘s site launched in time for the Democratic National Convention, but the reporters were too busy to post anything online. Look for recap video coverage in the next few weeks. I am also redesigning EIV and the EVVY Awards sites for launch by September 1. Emersive, the new media group I am starting at Emerson, is also launching by Orientation Week for incoming freshmen.
Labor Day Weekend should be fun. Song is transporting me to Tampa, FL for the marriage of my good friend Mark Lamb. I will be shooting the wedding video. Hopefully John will help me pick out a suit for the occasion on our upcoming Newbury Street Shopping Adventure.
Also on my plate: I am researching various routes to significantly boost my small business venture. I have tried twice to expand my new media production company, but I feel that the third time will be the charm with the added venture capital and the lessons learned. Hopefully I will be LLCed soon and on the road to fulfilling the capitalist dream.
As my dad quipped and I lamented, no matter how independent I think I am of my parents, my parents’ financial documents and co-signing ability are still in demand. Regardless of how financially capable I am, my credit history is younger than my brother Jonathan and my income not middle class. So pending the receipt of my parents’ co-signing papers, I will have a lovely apartment in the Harbor Point community. I just need to find someone to rent the other bedroom and someone to share the master bedroom with me. Emerson’s OCSS is helping with that search.
