Life’s Walk-Ons

Christy, Sarah, and I planned on attending an Actors in Action exposition / chat with casting directors event on April 5, 2003. Christy spent the day with her dad instead, but Sarah and I headed to Los Angeles. I enjoyed acting as a child and throughout high school, but I never seriously considered it as a career (nor do I now). The most I hoped to take from the event was information on how to get involved in more commercial advertising. It was supposed to be a day of fun in LALA-land.

The Actors in Action event totally threw me off. So many people were handing out headshots to anyone who would take them and feeding off of vendors selling the expensive headshot photography. Basically, conceited, narcissistic, and ugly prima donnas prevented those with real talent from being seen. I think I was the only one who realistically concluded that most at the event have little or no chance of ever making it to Hollywood. During one question-and-answer session with a casting director that I attended, the casting director openly admitted that she already had people chosen for parts she was casting during most auditions. The day left me feeling that any Hollywood plans were futile and that Madonna‘s American Life could not be more true for those wanting to the join the silver screen elite.

Sarah and I ate at Greenblatt’s (a tradition she has with Christy when they visit Los Angeles) before driving back down to San Diego. Guess what — none other than Britney Spears and her bodyguard walk in, order to-go, and leave. Sarah and I were the only other customers at the time. Yeah, it was totally random.
